Student Computer Recommendations

The York College Library and Technology Services Department provides this list as a guide when shopping for a new computer. We encourage students to consult with their Academic Department for specific hardware and software recommendations.

Windows 10

    • Better:

Additional Recommended Items

    • ACC Ethernet adapter (if laptop does not have port)
    • 10 foot Cat6 Ethernet Cable (for connecting wired in your residence hall)
    • 500GB or larger External Hard Drive (for backing up your laptop’s hard drive)
    • HDMI or Mini Display Port on your laptop or adapter (for presentations in YCP’s newest Smart Classrooms)


Major Specific Recommendations

Graphic Design: The Communication and the Arts Department recommends the use of a MacBook. The department also encourages students to have a subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud for students.

Computer Science: The Computer Science program recommends the use of Windows 10 PC’s. The program recommends that these computers have at least 16GB of memory, a quad-core processor with a graphics card that can drive 2 external monitors.

Business: The Graham School of Business recommends the use a Windows laptop running the 64bit version of Windows 10. The laptop battery must hold a charge for at least 3 hours. If a student does wish to use an Apple Macbook, it is highly recommended that the computer run Windows 10 in a virtual environment via Parallels software or Boot Camp installation.
